What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient medical technique that promotes healing and relieves pain. Practitioners activate the acupuncture meridians, or pathways, that travel throughout the body to affect the circulation of bodily fluids, stimulate the nervous system, and optimize the function of the organs, tissues and cells. Acupuncture primarily uses needles; for patients who are averse to needles, massage and electrical stimulation are other methods of activating acupuncture meridians.
Does acupuncture hurt?
The needles used for acupuncture are generally very thin and solid, not hollow, which means that insertion should be relatively painless. Patients are asked to lie still while acupuncture needles are in place to avoid shifting the needles, since abrupt shifting of acupuncture needles may dislodge them or cause discomfort.
How should I prepare for my appointment?
Please make sure you have eaten one to two hours before your treatment, even if just a snack. Wear comfortable and loose clothing so that it is possible to pull up sleeves and/or pant legs to needle areas on the thighs and upper arms.
We ask that you turn off your cell phone or put it on vibrate for the duration of the treatment. Be aware that you may fall asleep during your treatment, as acupuncture is often very relaxing.
What conditions can acupuncture treat?
In the US, acupuncture is commonly recognized as an alternative treatment for pain. While acupuncture excels in treating pain, it can also be very effective in the treatment of chronic and degenerative disorders as diverse as anxiety, autoimmune disease, or the aftereffects of stroke.
